Universe of Oreimo
Oreimo takes place in a fundamentally everyday world centered on the otaku culture of modern Japan: anime, light novels, games (including eroge), action figures and doujinshi circles. There are no supernatural powers; the conflict and dynamism of the universe come from social dynamics, the collector economy and online communities.
Social structures and 'forces'
- Circles and doujinshi: equivalent to 'clans' in the universe: groups of creators and fans who produce and sell works at events like Comiket. A circle's reputation determines influence and visibility.
- Forums and online platforms: act as battlegrounds and networks of alliances — "power" here is knowledge, reputation and digital reach; fansites and blogs shape trends.
- Genres as 'classes': instead of magical classes, there are categories of interest (moe, ecchi, mecha, slice of life, simulation games, etc.) that define identities, consumption styles and hierarchies among fans.
- Industry and Market: editors, light novel authors, studios and figure manufacturers function as institutions of economic power; limited editions, releases and scarcity create competition and obsession.
The world of Oreimo focuses on human interactions within this cultural ecosystem: personal secrets tied to hobbies, conflicts between family and the otaku community, and the emotional impact of being accepted — or not — by one's reference group.
