The world of Amestris and beyond
The universe of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood unfolds in a world technically close to our own, yet permeated by the systematized practice of alchemy. Geopolitics are dominated by nations with distinct cultural identities — Amestris as a centralized military state, Xing with its eastern traditions and merchant factions, Drachma, and peoples such as the Ishvalans with histories of conflict — making the world map relevant for alliances, trade, and wars.
Power system: Alchemy
Alchemy is the driving force of the universe: a science based on transmutation, transmutation circles and the principle known as Equivalent Exchange — to obtain something, something of equal value must be given. Tools and symbols such as circles, formulas and alchemical arrays regulate what can be transformed, while cultural variants of alchemy (Xing techniques, rituals, and military applications) show technical diversity within the same principle. Metaphysical concepts, such as the Gate of Truth and the notion of sacrifice, provide narrative and philosophical limits to the use of alchemy.
World rules and mechanics
- Equivalent Exchange: the ethical and practical basis that conditions transmutation and defines real and hidden costs.
- Circles and arrays: graphic resources that structure and channel alchemical energy; the absence or manipulation of these elements alters outcomes.
- Gates and the Truth: when the limits of conventional alchemy are crossed, metaphysical consequences arise that affect body, mind, and reality.
Geography and factions
Amestris is a continental country with a strong military presence, divided into administrative regions with roads, industrial cities, and military bases that support the structure of the State Alchemists. Neighboring nations like Xing and Drachma bring different traditions and techniques that influence diplomacy and technology. Regional conflicts, such as the traumas of ethnic communities and civil wars, mark the political map and collective memories.
Races, experiments, and creatures
The world presents variations on the human condition: homunculi (beings with anomalous properties and increased resilience), chimeras (hybrid creations from experiments), and humans with advanced prosthetics such as automail. These categories raise questions about scientific ethics, rights, and the cost of technology in militarized societies.
Political climate
The political climate is marked by strong military control, scientific agencies, and hidden interests that manipulate alchemy for power. Institutions such as the State Alchemists act as the technical arms of the State, while clandestine groups and foreign interests vie for influence. Themes of nationalism, conspiracy, and scientific responsibility are at the center of social tensions.
